A Little Bit About Costume Making

Costuming is a large part of the lure of belly dancing. Designing your own costume to fit your unique shape is something that every belly dancer should learn to do. You can design a costume around a theme or even choreograph a dance around a costume idea. If you absolutley can't deal with the thought of making one yourself than you can buy costumes online or if your lucky find one that someone else has made by hand.

You can expect to pay anywhere from $150 -$800 on a costume, depending on where you get it. Ebay has some good deals.

Want to make a costume for less money and less time?

Here are some tips...

1. Search Thrift shops, tag sales and Goodwill stores for old beaded dresses. Cut them up and use them to cover a bra and belt for starters. Then add your own fringe. Or if your lucky use fringe that you find already beaded.

2. Cut the bottom half of an old dress that has the style you are trying to accomplish, run some elastic through a casing (you have to sew the casing) and presto, you have a beautiful skirt. I have made several skirts this way from old prom dresses to consignment store finds.

3. Check out The Costume Goddess Tells All web site for more ideas and examples of thrifty costumes.
